If words do not simply describe the world, but rather act on it, these actions thus create social reality. In the spirit of The Club, aesthetic experience is merged in the object: individualism, traumas, internal societal fractures both visible and invisible, desires, hopes, and dreams are all restitched on the inside of a community experience. Sewing together a dress which will not be worn by anyone is a rite that transforms the symbolic and generates a shared experimental and creative space. The playful aspect allows for all those who participate in the performance to renegotiate the borders between themselves and others, to restitch the distance that separates one from another. Inside of a space like the club, it is possible to imagine trajectories free from imposed or accepted social normativities, rituals capable to elude sociocultural order and to bring back attention to a shared consciousness and to communal action.

Sewing together does not mean create a show, nor an audience, two aspects that dominate the social scene imposing the request of a performance and, thereby, subtracting authenticity. Emiliano Maggi proposes an inversion: the social performance no longer a show, but an experience of collective reflection. The social actor is invited to undress itself of its public role/habitus and to do a simple gesture that transforms sewing into a creative action for the rebuilding of the social fabric. Abandoning the public scenario of the show, the people who sew together can put back into play a personal resource like dexterity and share time to reflect, choose, and piece together their own thought. In the era of consumption and of simultaneity, sewing implicates a diverse perception of time, a naturally slower rhythm, and a concentration that invites deepening. The action of collectively sewing offers the possibility of a meta-experience that eliminates the social habitus, the spectacularization of social action, the public role: in their place, the gesture that creates a form capable of expressing aesthetic and social equality, creative liberty and cultural depth.

Thanks to the support of Gucci, a brand that conveys an aesthetic code devoted to transforming luxury into an ethical responsibility, Gucci’s fabric will be the real and imaginary material of this collective experience. The dress-work created by the community of The Club will be apart of the archive of Gucci, technical sponsor of the exhibition.

In collaboration with: Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, Accademia di Costume e Moda (Rome)
