Italo Zuffi. Quello che eri, e quello che sei (What you used to be, and what you are)
curated by Cecilia Canziani and Ilaria Gianni
February 11th - May 15th, 2015
Opening: Wednesday, February 11th, 2015 from 6.30pm
Nomas Foundation, Viale Somalia 33, Rome
Nomas Foundation presents Quello che eri, e quello che sei (Who you were, and who you are) Italo Zuffi's first institutional solo exhibition (Imola, 1969). Comprising a vast body of works, the show attempts to suggest a broad reading of the artist’s research.
The show, curated by Cecilia Canziani and Ilaria Gianni, is the initial episode of a shared reflection on Italo Zuffi’s practice that will continue over during the next 12 months at de Appel Arts Centre, Amsterdam; ar/ge kunst, Bozen; and MAN, Nuoro.
Through sculptures, performances, photographic and text based works, some expressly developed for the occasion of the exhibition and others already existing, Quello che eri, e quello che sei offers an analysis of the artist’s work through themes that characterise his practice since the beginning, such as the behaviour of the individual versus the group, the relation between body and space, the precision and chance of a gesture, the uncanny that breaks the surface of things.
Conceived as an episode of a more complex itinerary, the show is also interpreted by the artist as an occasion to reflect on his own work. In this frame, the time of the exhibition is not separated from the moment of production: some works might be replaced by others during the course of the show, new ones might be added and alter the presentation, or simply, ideas and objects realised in this time span, will migrate and feed the next chapters of the project.
Italo Zuffi (Imola, 1969) works and lives in Milan.
