Recounting, translating, sharing, reflecting, developing, transforming, revealing, disclosing, enchating. The complete screening, presents a series of screenings at Nomas Foundation, including a selection of the films shown on the occasion of A Film Cycle, the two days film festival (26-27 March, Cinema Farnese Persol, Rome) that aimed at analysing the way in which documentary film tackles the narrative device and how artists’ practices are recounting our history today, while keeping trace of and translating its representation.
The artists occupy the complex role of being viewers, makers, researchers and reporters at the same time, exploring these different positions. If the use of documentary testifies the urgent need to discuss specific realities, the artists seem to be aware of the ideologies and structures that govern the role of the documentary itself as a practice. The use of found footage, video reportage, essayistic narration, on site experience, and re-enactments of real events, question, through the films, the same qualities at the core of documentary as a language, intended as an encyclopaedic and objective educational tool. The works bring in front line the profound ambivalence within recognized strategies of truth and authenticity, underlining the uncertain state of representation, the uncertain state of the image itself.
