South of Imagination | Symposium

3 October 2022

Friday, October 7th, 2022
Parsons The New School
Wollman Hall
West 11th Street, New York, USA
From 9am to 5pm

On October 7th, 2022, a symposium organized by Parsons The New School, Nomas Foundation, and the Research Unit “Aesthetics in the Social”, DiSSE, Sapienza University of Rome, will consider decolonial pedagogy from the perspective of southern epistemologies and critical urban studies.

We live in a hybrid society claiming the desire to establish, validate, and recognize social understanding as an authentic space of inter-subjective relationship. Such a relevant need detected in the rise of pedagogic art projects has been reframing the sociocultural meaning and aims of the contemporary artist’s practice. The speakers will address crucial issues involving the reconceptualization of the pedagogical experience through Valerio Rocco Orlando’s process of establishing a self-generative, self-reflective, and independent art school in the heart of UNESCO Heritage Sassi di Matera, in the South of Italy.

Supported by the Italian Council (9th Edition 2020), a program that promotes Italian contemporary art in the world by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture.
