On Thursday 13 December at 6:30 pm, Nomas Foundation will host, in its premises, the book launch of Jaanus Samma. Outhouse by the Church, a catalogue accompanying the exhibition of the same name curated by Eugenio Viola.

The event will be introduced by Letteria Fassari, Professor of Sociology of Cultural Processes and Sociology of Contemporary Cultures at Sapienza University. It will be followed by a conversation between Berlin-based critic and writer Kristian Vistrup Madsen and artist Jaanus Samma.

After a residency at Nomas Foundation in Rome, where he explored the geography of the city’s cruising sites, and a long anthropologic fieldwork led in Kodavere, Estonia, Samma has developed the Outhouse by the Church project that focuses on public toilets. This ostensibly humble and sometimes underestimated subject is closely related to such issues as hierarchy, inequality, the body, aesthetics and politics. The public toilet is a space where the border between public and private is blurred, a space which is often discreetly disregarded and for this reason, during its long history and in different social and cultural contexts, has created opportunities for a variety of social interaction.

The publication contains essays by Raffaella Frascarelli, Eugenio Viola, writer Travis Jeppesen, folklorist Andreas Kalkun and a conversation between conservator Hilkka Hiiop and Jaanus Samma.

Letteria G. Fassari teaches Sociology of Cultural Processes and Sociology of Contemporary Cultures at the Department of Sociological and Economic Science, Faculty of Political, Sociological and Communication Sciences, Sapienza, University of Rome.
Her research focuses on cultural and communicative processes of contemporaneity. Her latest book, Poplife. Il realitysmo tra mimetismo e chance sociale is published by Carocci Editore.

Kristian Vistrup Madsen is a writer and art critic based in Berlin. He publishes regularly in Frieze, Artforum, momus and Studio International. Look out for a weird essay on ABBA in the forthcoming winter issue of Flash Art.

Jaanus Samma is a Tallinn-based artist working with urban space, the subjective experiences of it and the relations between the public and the private space. He is currently attending the WIELS Residency Programme in Brussels.
