Wednesday, May 7th, 2008 it will be inaugurated Nomas Foundation.
Through this project, the Roman collectors Raffaella and Stefano Sciarretta want to support and to promote the work of young artists.
Their words express clearly the reasons that have led them to concretize this project: Collecting has made us mobile, free and open to such an extent that we wanted to create an organization in order to delve into how we got to where we are. Nomas is both a stopping and starting point, not just for going beyond it, but also for sustaining the projects of all those who wish to use contemporary art to stimulate other approaches and new journeys.
The project stars with the exhibition of 3,24 sq.m., a work of the young Italian artist Francesco Arena. The number that appears in the title is referred to the space of a prisoner’s cell. As Stefano Chiodi explains in the catalogue: The cell is a 1:1 scale reproduction of the space created within an apartment in Rome at Via Montalcini 8 where, according to statements made by Anna Laura Braghetti, Prospero Gallinari and Mario Moretti, between March 16 and May 9, 1978, Aldo Moro spent the last fifty-five days of his life as a prisoner of the Brigate Rosse. Thirty years ago … The cell is a political work of art. … It is a political work, not a work about politics. It is not about the said, the visible mechanism, the jargon, the symbols, and not even, although it might be its point of departure, the history of Italian politics. It is more about politics as a process of which art is a component (necessary, is the postulate).
The aim to expose this Francesco Arena’s work has been determined by a reflection about the importance to preserve the memory of the past, in a period in which Time seem to pass by too fast. Remember could be sometimes a painful exercise, but it is necessary to maintain the consciousness alive.
On the occasion of the opening of the foundation it will be publish a bilingual catalogue (Italian-English) concerning Francesco Arena’s work with a presentation of Raffaella and Stefano Sciarretta and critical texts of Stefano Chiodi and Alessandro Rabottini.
