One Day Exhibition on Wednesday, January 25th, 2017 from 7.00pm
Extended until February 15th, 2017
Nomas Foundation, viale Somalia 33, Rome

Simultaneously to Alfredo Pirri’s exhibition, RWD – FWD, hosted in his Rome based Studio/Archive, in viale dei Consoli 73, the premises of Nomas Foundation have been used by the artist as an active studio space in which he has realized a new work – specifically conceived for one of the rooms of the Foundation – entitled Quello che avanza (That Which Advances).

On January 25th, starting from 7 pm, the work will be presented to the audience in viale Somalia 33 (Rome), during a unique evening that will include the special participation of the musician Daniele Roccato, who will play a series of pieces for double bass, emphasizing the immersive experience of Pirri’s work.

Quello che avanza (That Which Advances) – ideal prosecution of Alfredo Pirri’s characteristic investigation on the themes of light and colour – derives from a specific research on the cyanotype technique, which allows to develop large off-camera prints, characterized by intense variations of blue.
The work is composed by 144 prints that offer the audience an embracing environment, with great visual and emotional impact. 130 sheets testify the process phase and the residuals produced by it. While, 14 are the result of a unique procedure that see the use of feathers, directly posed to impress sheets prepared with chemical substances and exposed to UV rays.
The evocation of vegetal forms in some pictures is connected to the work of the botanic Anna Atkins, pioneer in the study of the flora through cyanotype and author of the book Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions.

The title Quello che avanza (That Which Advances), chosen by the artist, seems to refer both to what is left over and to something that is advancing, recalling the idea at the base of RWD – FWD: a journey inside Alfredo Pirri’s work and critical thought, addressed backwards, but at the same time projected towards the future.

A reshaped version of Quello che avanza (That Which Advances), will be part of the Solo Show devoted to the artist, opening in April at MACRO Testaccio, curated by Benedetta Carpi de Resmini and Ludovico Pratesi, further step of the project I pesci non portano fucili (Fish cannot carry guns).

On February 16th, 2017 – in between the two exhibitions – MAXXI (Sala Guido Reni) will host the conference Attraverso lo specchio (Through the Mirror) devoted to the relationship between art and architecture, topic at the core of the creative path of the artist.
