Is it urgent to speak of phenomena like montage and externalization as far as our current experience of the images is concerned? And if so, why? And since the faculty of imagination plays a key role in our perception of reality, what sort of transformation in this ‘organ’ are we experimenting today? The eBook Inside/Outside. The work of imagination and the forms of montage addresses these two fundamental issues, which will be debated during the round table that will take place at Nomas Foundation, on Sunday, November 12, at 5pm.
This project began eighteen months ago, at the end of a seminar organized and directed by Prof. Pietro Montani (Full Professor of Aesthetics in the Philosophy Department, at Sapienza University in Rome): the seminar was devoted to the subject-matter of the ‘external image’. Scholars from several different universities in Italy took part to it, and presented analyses of various ‘theoretical objects’, i.e. visual and audiovisual texts showing specific traits that claim for the elaboration of a theory: from cinema to TV series, up to the most recent experimentations with digital technologies. At the end of this seminar, we decided to give a more structured and upgraded form to this fascinating array of materials, and collected these contributions into an online volume of essays. As a matter of fact, we found in the blog ‘il lavoro culturale’ the ideal space for publishing this book: thanks to the blog, what was now an eBook had indeed the chance to be accompanied by images, video and other web contents, which were put in dialogue with the texts via an ‘intra-media’ form. The twenty-one essays are divided into four thematic areas, so supplying a virtual path that leads the reader through them, from the most strongly theoretical issues up to the most contemporary views on the world of images.
